The UC San Diego Annual Horizons of Global Health Research Symposium was held on Wednesday, May 1st at the Great Hall. The Global Health Program’s Class of 2019 had the opportunity to present their research about the diversity of global health work around the world. These research posters included topics concerning mental health and substance abuse, immigrant and refugee health, nutrition, women’s and adolescent health, global health diplomacy, HIV/AIDS, indigenous and traditional healing, health disparities, and clinical & epidemiological issues. Over 150 faculty, students, and community members attended the event, making it the largest Horizons event yet!

In addition to the Research Symposium, we held our Annual Expo where students were shown various opportunities at UC San Diego and beyond to complete their field experience. These organizations included representatives from the Center on Gender Equity and Health, the Academic Internship Program & UCDC, the Health Frontiers in Tijuana Undergraduate Internship Program, and Study Abroad UC San Diego.

Following the Undergraduate Poster Session and Field Experience Expo, we welcomed our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Joseph Caperna, who successfully addressed symposium attendees on the topic of: “A Life in Global Health”.

Dr. Caperna is a Clinical Professor of Medicine within the Division of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego. He received the 1998 UCSD Humanitarian Award for helping to start a blood bank in Huaraz, Peru, and the 2007 UCSD Diversity Award for his contributions to underserved populations. Dr. Caperna used the keynote to speak about the various projects he’s been involved in within the global health field, in locations such as Peru, Mexico City, and Tanzania. Dr. Caperna encouraged students to continue with their incredibly important research and change the world.
