The UC San Diego Annual Horizons of Global Health Research Symposium and Field Experience Expo was held on Tuesday, May 9th at the Great Hall. Global Health students, including our upcoming graduating class of 2017, had the unique opportunity to present their research about the diversity of global health work around the world. These presentations included research from the areas of Immigrant/Refugee Health, Mental Health/Substance Abuse, Women’s and Children’s Health, Health Communication/Education, Community Empowerment and Community Health. Faculty and students from across campus attended the event.

This year’s poster session 1st place award winner is graduating senior, Celia Breuer with her project entitled, “The Bottle Is My Wife:” A Qualitative Approach to Understanding Excessive Alcohol Consumption and Intimate Partner Violence in Ugandan Fishing Communities.
The 2nd place poster session award winner is graduating senior, Alexandra Pryor with her project on The Validity of PTSD as a Concept and Sleep as both a Predictor & Remedy for PTSD among Refugees in Jordan.

In addition to the Research Symposium we held our Annual Field Experience Expo where our study abroad partners, Study Abroad UC San Diego, SIT Study Abroad, American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS), and IES Abroad, provided a wealth of information on international health related program offerings. Students explored potential international opportunities which can fulfill their field experience requirement and/or elective coursework.
Following the Undergraduate Poster Session and Field Experience Expo, we welcomed our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Kristie Ebi who successfully addressed the student body on the topic of: “The Health Risks of Climate Change”.
Dr. Ebi is known for conducting research on the impacts of and adaptation to climate change, including research on extreme events, thermal stress, foodborne safety and security, waterborne diseases, and vectorborne diseases. Dr. Ebi shared her incredible passion for this pressing Global Health issue. Then she led a thought-provoking discussion with the students to close her keynote.
The 2017 Horizons of Global Health ended with a cupcake reception to celebrate the Global Health Program’s graduating seniors.
